Announcements
Peter Sherwood has been the deserving recipient of two recent awards: on 17 October, Nemzeti Szótárnap (National Dictionary Day), his Oxford University Press angol-magyar szótár nyelvtanulóknak (OUP English-Hungarian Language Learners’ Dictionary, 2002) was awarded the Kiváló magyar szótár díj (Outstanding Hungarian Dictionary Prize) at the MTA (Hungarian Academy Sciences). Based on the English Oxford Wordpower Dictionary, the dictionary is designed for Hungarian students of English.
On 13 December, and together with Emeritus Professor László Péter (UCL-SSEES), Peter will be awarded the Magyar Köztársasági Érdemrend, Középkeresztje (Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, Commander’s Cross), at the Hungarian Embassy, for services to Hungarian culture in the UK.
Last but not least comes certainly the only announcement that makes us proud, and sad. Having taught Hungarian at SSEES since 1972, and from 1 January 2008, Peter has been appointed to share his expertise with the New World, where he will be the first László Birinyi Distinguished Professor of Hungarian Language and Culture, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. We would like to offer our thanks to Peter, our respects to the Department of Slavic Studies, Chapel Hill, NC, and to express our sadness at seeing Peter leave London, as well as our hope that Chapel Hill will prove to be a jomas kol for Peter and his wife Julia.
