Spring 2008 programme
1 February: Dr Gwen Jones will be giving a talk on contemporary urban regeneration efforts, and the development of mall culture (alias ‘plázaláz’).
8 February: Screening and discussion of Péter Bacsó’s 1983 film Te rongyos élet, a film that deals with the post-war practice of kitelepítés (forced resettlement), in which an actress is sent to live in the countryside for a lesson in collectivisation.
22 February: Eszter Tarsoly will be discussing aspects of linguistic purism in Hungarian and Romanian speech communities/contexts, the subject of her doctoral research.
29 February: Rob Gray shall present his doctoral research on questions of nineteenth-century land reform.
7 March: Our guest will be Dr Rachel BecklesWillson, author of Ligeti, Kurtág and Hungarian Music during the Cold War, who will present some aspects of her work.
14 March: Mark Carpenter shall present an overview of contemporary environmental disputes in Hungary.
Each week, Dr Daniel Abondolo will also introduce an historical overview of one Hungarian consonant, beginning on 1 February with ‘n’.
